The continentality of the city means that extreme thermal values recorded by the great North American cities go from -26.1 ° C to +41.7 ° C.
Average temperatures range, for maximum values, from +3.1 ° C in January to +29.5 ° C in July and, for temperatures from -3.7 ° C in January to + 20.2 ° C in July. Regarding rainfall New York has an average rainfall high, 1200.1 mm, driest month (February) and recorded 83.0 mm and the wettest (November) that goes up to 113.5 mm.
The city recorded several snowfalls a year. Average 71 cm of snow fall.
The winters are rainy and snowy (although New York is located at the same latitude as Naples, Mediterranean) and it depends on the prevailing currents. The southern and eastern bring warmer temperatures while the northern and western frost and snow. This is the time of year when the city is more likely to be hit by blizzards that real snowstorms that are plunging temperatures several degrees below zero crippling, under dozens of inches of snow, traffic and all its economic activities.
The summers are hot and rainy, with several storms accompanied by hail, which soon may flood various parts of the city. This is also the time of year when the city can be affected by severe heat waves coming from the west / southwest that I can spill the maximum over 35 ° C and then boosted indexes consequential sultry humidity.
Autumn can still record warmth semi-Summer (Indian Summer), but also brings the first frosts and the first snowfall.
The spring, still cold in the first part (the returns are not uncommon in winter in style), is an explosion of colors and revival of vegetation in the second half and the first heats advancing the summer.
Along the areas near the coast are not uncommon sea mists. New York can be rarely affected by tropical storms and hurricanes by real (usually downgraded to storms) which date from the Caribbean or Florida.
